Important Rules in Website Design

When it involves your website, extra attention should be paid to each minute detail to form sure it performs optimally to serve its purpose. Here are five important rules of thumb to watch to form sure your website performs well.

Do not use splash pages:

Splash pages are the first pages you see once you reach an online site. They usually have very nice pictures with words like “welcome” or “click here to register.” In fact, they are just that – beautiful vases with no real purpose. Don’t let your visitors have a reason to hit the back button! Give them the price of your site up front without the splash page.

Do not use excessive banner advertisements:

Even the smallest amount net savvy people have trained themselves to ignore banner advertisements so you’ll be wasting valuable website land. Instead, provide more valuable content and forge relevant affiliate links into your content, leaving your visitors feeling the need to shop instead of being forced to shop.

Have a simple and clear navigation:

You have to provide a simple and really straightforward navigation menu so as that even a young child will skills to use it. Stay away from complicated Flash based navigation menus or multi-tiered dropdown navigation menus. If your visitors do not know the way to navigate your website, they’re going to leave your website.

Have a transparent indication of where the user is:

When visitors are deeply engrossed in browsing your site, you’ll be wanting to make sure they know which a neighborhood of the situation they’re in at that moment. That way, they’re going to be ready to browse relevant information or navigate to any section of the location easily. Don’t confuse your website visitors because confusion means “abandon ship”!

Avoid using audio on your site:

If your visitors stay on your website for a long time while reading your content, you have to make sure that they are not distracted by certain audio cycles on and on your website. If you enforce adding audio, confirm they have some control over it — volume or muting controls would work fine.
